What this app is

Familiai records conversations between two people who have agreed to be recorded, writes them down, and lets either of them ask questions about what was actually said. Both people see the same record. There is no private view and no score.

Getting started

1. Sign in

With Google or with Apple. The first person to sign in creates the archive.

2. Add the other person

The first person generates a pairing code in the app; the second enters it on their own phone. Joining is how the second person agrees to share the archive — it cannot be done on their behalf.

3. Record the agreement

Each of you reads a short consent sentence aloud, in your own voice. The app will not record a conversation until both of you have. That recording is the record of your agreement, and it is kept.

4. Record a conversation

Both of you can record the same conversation on your own phones; the app joins them. One phone alone also works.

Common problems

Lines say "Speaker ?" instead of a name

Expected, and not a failure. Your phone only recognises your voice; your partner's phone recognises theirs, and the two are joined once both are sent. If a line still has no name, nobody's phone was confident enough — the app leaves it unnamed rather than guessing, because a wrong name is worse than no name.

A pairing code will not work

Codes last fifteen minutes and can be used once. Generate a fresh one.

The transcript has not appeared yet

Transcription happens on our servers and takes a minute or two for a long conversation. It will appear in your archive on its own.

Voices are not being told apart well

Settings › Diagnostics › Voice calibration measures how far apart your two voices actually are, and nothing is uploaded while it does.

Your data

Take a copy

Settings › Your data › Download a copy of everything. Both of you get the same file.

Delete a single conversation

Open it and delete it. The recording, the transcript and everything built from it all go.

Delete your account and everything in it

Settings › Your data › Delete everything. This cannot be undone, and because the archive is shared it deletes the record for both of you. Download a copy first if you want one.

Stop sharing

Settings › Sharing. Withdrawing closes the archive for both people after a seven-day grace period, during which the person who withdrew can call it off.

What we will not do

We will not show one of you something the other cannot see, and we will not tell you who was right. The app holds what was said; what to do about it is yours.
